PM World Publishes Insights from SoftSol’s Software Modernization Projects
Siva Kumar Akkiraju, a PMP certified senior manager at SoftSol Technologies, shared insights gained from multiple successful modernization projects executed at SoftSol.
His article titled Synthesis of Project Management Processes in IT Migration Projects discussed how project management best practices are adapted to successful software migration initiatives.
Akkiraju’s analysis considers two major modernization initiatives executed by SoftSol. Each project involved a unique target technology stack, based on the individual requirements of the client. SoftSol’s automated software migration tools assist with software modernizations from multiple legacy technologies, such as PowerBuilder, Cobol, Oracle Forms, and Forte. SoftSol migration projects generally target either Java or .NET development platforms.
In detailing the project management processes applied at each stage of the migration initiative, Akkiraju concludes that, “Every migration project can be unique in the value produced through enhanced efficiency in process application, carry forward information through elaborated Organizational Process Assets and Enterprise Environment Factors.”
Each software modernization project SoftSol executes contains three critical components – tools, people, and processes. Even though SoftSol’s tools, like the PowerBuilder migration tool, lead the industry in efficiency and accuracy, the process portion of this solution triumvirate plays an equally critical role in a successful project.
The process and methodology SoftSol applies to modernization projects has been developed over a decade of software migration experience working with leaders in the private and public sector, such as Genentech, HBO (Time Warner), CalPERS, US Department of Defense, Superior Court of California, and State Compensation Insurance Fund. One client recently commented on these processes after SoftSol successfully migrated their mission-critical laboratory information management system: “Ultimately SoftSol completed the 9000 person-day project on-time and on-budget, achieving all of the performance standards we had set for the initiative.”
